During the cold war, shortwave radio buffs often intercepted number stations. These were mysterious broadcasts of series of numbers read by an automated, often female voice, and introduced by a signature tune or call. No one has ever taken responsibility for them and rumours that they were the work of drug dealers or spy organisations have never been substantiated. Speculatively, they relied on the receiver having a code book, possibly preprinted that was called a one time pad, or having a copy of a particular edition of an ordinary novel which the broadcast would give the page number and line number of, to establish the alphabet for the day.
For the duration of this work, each day, one paragraph of Marx’s Capital will be broadcasted using Milton Friedman’s Capitalism and Freedom as the codebook. Thus the seminal work of the emancipation of humanity will be remediated through the seminal work of humanity’s enslavement to raw accumulation of capital.
